Using Yoga & Meditation for CIS
What is Kundalini Yoga?
The word "yoga" comes from an ancient Indian language called Sanskrit, and it literally means union. Yoga gives its practitioners the gift of experiencing inner unity of body, mind, and spirit, so that they can remain centered and do not suffer from the duality of inner conflict or stress. Ultimately, practitioners experience a union of individual consciousness with universal consciousness, and an awareness of the interdependence of the entire universe.
While yogic traditions hold that our bodies are sacred, yoga is not a religion. Similar to the practice of martial arts disciplines, people of any faith or religion, or of no religion, may experience the healing benefits of yoga.
Kundalini Yoga is one of many varieties of yoga, and it is considered to be the root yoga or mother yoga. Kundalini literally means the lock of curled hair of the beloved, and it refers to the coiled energy that we all hold within our being. The practice of Kundalini Yoga teaches us to tap inner energy resources through the release of energy blocks or tension that we store in our physical, emotional, and mental bodies. Our storage of that tension often occurs as an unconscious reaction to stress and pressure in our lives.
Counteract Critical Incident Stress with Kundalini Yoga
The dedicated people who serve our communities as First Responders to critical incidents, often placing themselves in harm’s way to save the lives of others, can benefit from the increased stamina and resiliency provided by this technology. These practices can help First Responders maintain the inner strength that they need to continue performing their critical work, without sacrificing their health and peace of mind.
Although the technology of yoga is ancient, it is making a strong comeback in today’s high-stress world, where increasing numbers of people are experiencing significant pressure and stress in their lives. Common methods that people use to counteract stress include some that are more helpful than others, and some that are actually harmful. Regular exercise, individual counseling, group therapy, and nutritional diet are all beneficial. Alcohol, nicotine, and drugs—the legal and illegal varieties—can have detrimental effects.
Growing in popularity, the practice of yoga and meditation is a stress management option that thousands of people are discovering. It is not only effective—with almost immediate results—it is also inexpensive and has health benefits rather than detriments.
Daily Practice of Yoga Reaps Benefits
The practice of yoga and meditation are known to improve the respiratory, circulatory, glandular, digestive, and nervous systems of the body, as well as counteracting despair, anger, and depression. Gaining benefits from yoga and meditation does, however, require a regular commitment—some time that is set aside for practice each day. Practitioners often come to view this as a cherished time of their day, because of the beneficial results that they experience.
